Disambiguation

NOT to be confused with Samuel Finley (1775-1849) of Augusta County, Virginia who married Mary "Polly" Tate. Many researchers have confused the two Samuel Finley's.


Notes

!Based on information provided by Stella G. Finley, P.O. Box 612, Georgetown, KY 40324, Samuel and his brother, John, went to Scott County, KY about 1807. There is an 1807 deed to Samuel Finley from Cornelius Duvall (DB B:67). On 7 June 1813, a deed from Samuel Finley to William Finley of Augusta County for land lying in said county was acknowledged in Scott County Court (Scott County OB:B:290). Her notes also provide the following cemetery inscription (name of cemetery not given): "Samuel Finley who departed this life Dec. 21, 1833 in the 64th year of his age. He was a believer in Christ, happy in life, patient in death. Beneath this silent Tomb His lifeless body lies. His soul in spotless innocence Has risen to the skies." Also, "In memory of Martha Jane, wife of B.M. Hathaway, only daughter of Samuel Finley. Born Oct. 11th 1819, married April 7th 1840, died Feb. 3rd 1842." Her notes also include the following obituary of S. Thomson Finley, "Born Bourban Co, Ky. Aug. 2, 1815; Died Palmyra, Mo. Jan. 24, 1879, Dropsy; Son of Samuel and Martha Finley; Parents both sides, Scotch descent; immediate parents natives of Va., married March 25, 1841 to Ellen Bryan; daughter of the late Samuel Bryan of Fayette Co. , Ky. obituary speaks of him a Capt. Finley." Letters of administration were granted Jno (T. or S.) Finley for Saml Finley (date not given) in Scott County OB D:44-45.

Martha: !Mentioned in deed to Samuel and Patsy from Benjamin Bradford on N. Elkhorn (Scott County DB B:438). Also mentioned in obituary of S. Thomson Finley, as his mother (see his notes).

53. i Samuel Thomson Finley b. 2 Aug 1815, Bourbon Co., KY, d. 24 Jan 1879, Palmyra, Marion Co, MO. !Vital data comes from obit in "Marion County Democrat," of Palmyra, MO, dated 27 February 1879. It also states he was the son of Samuel and Martha Finley, both sides of Scotch descent, immediate parents natives of VA; married 25 March 1841 to Ellen Bryan, daughter of the late Samuel Bryan of Fayette County, KY. He is also referred to as Capt. Finley. A Thomson Finley is mentioned in the inventory and appraisement of John T. Finley, 11 September 1837 (Scott County WB F:42).

54. ii Martha Jane Finley b. 11 Oct 1819, d. 7 Apr 1842. !Vital data found in notes from cemetery inscription from Stella Finley. It also says she was the only daughter and married B.M. Hathaway on 7 April 1840.
