Letter from WR Hutcherson in 1982, re: Sallie's death:

Dear Loved Ones: This is Thursday, May 13, 1982 at 9 N.W. 17 Street, Delray Beach, Fla, 33444. As you all know, I have suffered the biggest sorrow of my life. My Queen passed away about 6:25 p.m. on Wed. May 5, 1982, just one week from her 82nd birthday, and is buried in Palm Beach Memorial Park, about seven miles north of here. Altho we had two lots at Gainesville in the Alachua Memorial cemetary, it seemed wise to exchange those lots for ones down here. Of course it was more expensive down here where so many senior citizens live. After the cancer operation, we were told by Dr. Love that there was no hope for Sally since the cancer had permeated the liver. They sewed her back up but did put in a colostomy opening on her left side. We were told she would fade rapidly since she was not eating. Liquids were available for her but she did not want to eat. Oxygen tube in her nose, tube in vein to feed her a bit, pain shots every four hours, more or less, cathera for the urine, and opening in left side for any bowel waste. She talked very little, she was so weak. Sometimes she would nod her head one way or the other when we asked her a question. When loved ones would tell her they loved her, they thot they heard her say that she loved them. I could hear very little. A day or so before she died I thot I heard her say, "What time is it?" Sarah was at her bedside, when Martha arived at about five minutes before she died. Gene Cochran and I had been out to see her 3 or 4 hours before she passed away, but she seemed to be laboring for breath at that time, even tho nurse said she was alright. They called Morgan (two miles away at home) and he pronounced her dead. A doctor had to be present for Hospital to have the above fact. Sarah sweetly says there has been a complete circle of relationship between Morgan and Sally. In the Berea College boarding hall, Morgan was washing dishes when Sally was in charge, and she noticed that nice looking young man. She invited him out to our home in a party group and Sarah met him. He was the one to see mother's wonderful life officially ended. She had not felt well for weeks but she wanted to get moved from Gainesville to Delray, where she would have nearby her two favorite doctors (Morgan and his son-in-law, Dr. Mike Wheeler, who is part of the office setup). We moved down here on April 8, and Sally was buried one month later on May 8th. Of course, none of us dreamed she was in such serious condition. She always was optomistic and thot she would be o.k. if she could just live down here where so many loved ones are nearby. Wm. flew in from Cal. before the operation and staid about a week. Then he and his two fine boys flew in the day before the funeral at the Cason United Methodist Church, which Sally and I joined three days before she died. For 33 years we had been members of the First United Church in Gainesville. We have six grown grand sons and they all wanted to come and be pallbearers. One (Robert Cochran in Texas) missed his plane and cried over the phone I was told. Our grandson by marriage (Sally Wheeler's doctor husband filled in for Robert Cochran). Ou pastor, Brother Donald Mackay asked the loved ones for a statement of the habits and qualities of Sally and wove them into the funeral service which was taped, due to Wm's thotfulness. Thanks to all of you for your phone calls, flowers, memorials, letters, and sincere sympathy. We all appreciate this love of others. Friends of the Wings and Cochrans have been so wonderful to us, bringing in food, in addition to the other evidences of understanding. One black woman who cleans office, etc. came with much delicious food. Love to each of you. WRH
