    Final rites were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Van Natta Funeral Home for Mrs. Sarah Maitland Beardsley, 87, who died Friday morning at the Glidden Hospital in DeKalb, where she had been a patient since the previous Sunday. Mrs. Beardsley had been in failing health for a number of years. The Jehovah Witnesses were in charge of the services and burial took place in the Ohio Grove Cemetery.

    She was born in Ontario, Canada, May 6, 1867, the daughter of James and Sarah Maitland, she being the youngest of 16 children. She came to Sycamore with her parents, when but two years old and grew to mature years here. In 1906, she was married to William Beardsley of Elgin. They resided in Sycamore for a number of years, later moving to Genoa, and living there until Mr. Beardsley’s death in 1945, when Mrs. Beardsley returned to Sycamore and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Gardner and family. She possessed kindly traits of character, which acquired for her many friends, down through the years.

    Surviving her death are her daughter, Mrs. Jesse (Sarah) Gardner of this city, Mrs. Dorothy Gardner Terheum of New Orleans, La., and Mrs. Sadie Gardner Hubbard of Sycamore, also four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, one brother, Henry Maitland, 96, of Beloit, Wis., and several nieces and nephews, including Lester and George Maitland of Sycamore.

    Betty Lorraine Hubbard, 78, of Sycamore, Ill., died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Pine Acres Care Center in DeKalb.

    Born April 21, 1926, in Sycamore, she was the daughter of Richard Franklin Hubbard and Sadie Matilda (Gardner) Hubbard. She retired from GTE.

    She served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954 as a staff car driver in Washington, D.C., and was a member of the American Legion. She loved the Cubs and had a great sense of humor. She was a very generous, good-hearted person who was always helping someone and put others above herself.

    She is survived by nieces and nephews <names of living individuals have been removed;> several great-nieces and -nephews; and a cousin, <names of living individuals have been removed> of Ohio.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jesse "Curly" Hubbard; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Don Wolfe; and a special friend, Christine "Emmy" Ellsberry.

    The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home, 1245 Somonauk St. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore. There will be no visitation. The family will greet friends after the funeral service.
