Rufus is believed to be the brother of Dank C. Copeland although it is not proven. All family members remember him being called Uncle and referred to as Dank's brother. Early census records show Rufus was born after the death of his father; therefore, he and Dank may be illigitmate. Family lore speculates that he may be the son of Samuel Dillard.
