Swierenga: Page 14: "The immigrants of 1848 and 1849 were the Frisians Maas van der Kooi, a dairyman who painted houses in Chicago and served as the first treasurer of First Reformed Church, and Gosse Vierstra, a ship's carpenter's hired hand who advanced to become a ship carpenter. From Zeeland came the house painter Willem Goosen, the tailor Isaac van't Hof, and the workman Jannis Schaap. Zuid Holland sent out Adam Ooms, a village police man who had to accept a common laborer's job in Chicago. All these emigrated with wive and children. Other 1849 arrivals were the families of Rudolf Keun (Kuin) a carpenter from Groningen; Simon Nederveld from Zuid Holland, Roelof Pieters, an unmarried farmer from Drenthe, who later succeeded Van Raalte as pastor of Holland's First Reformed Church; Nicholas (Klaas) Voute (Foute), a painter from Noord Holland and Thomas Vander Zee.
