Children of Ezekiel Dodge Wheeler and Lucretia Thurston: Mary T. Wheeler m. Roswell P. Keith.

  2.   The Wheeler Genealogy identifies Mary's husband confidently, but without any evidence, as Roswell P. Keith. The Keith Genealogy, p. 53, says Roswell Read Keith, b. Uxbridge 28 Nov 1790 m. 24 Mar 1814 Phebe Rice, d. 25 Oct 1874 and had children R. Dodge Wheeler and Alonzo. Uxbridge VRs, p. 98, record the birth of "Roswel Read Keith" on 28 Nov 1790 to Chapin Keith and Elizabet (Taft). The 1814 marriage to Phebe Rice is found in Vermont VRs here. No death date is found for Phebe, but the marriage of Roswell Keith to Mary T Wheeler in 1818 is also found in Barre as cited on the family page. Thus one might suspect Phebe died, as a child named Dodge Wheeler Keith, b. 1819, certainly would be expected to belong to Mary, not Phebe. Find A Grave includes several graves in Find A Grave: Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier, VT, but unfortunately most are without picture. Pertinent are Cawsel R Keith [note spelling, also note the death date said to be 25 Dec 1871], and Mary T Keith, d. 21 Oct 1859, the unpictured inscription apparently calling her "wife of Rawsel". Vermont VRs do have a record of the death of Mary T. Keith on 21 Oct 1859 here, her husband (presumably) Raswell R. Keith, but her father said to be Gen. Shubal Flint. It is suspected that the last is an error, probably the son Alonzo providing the father of his wife (Laura Flint) rather than the father of his mother as asked. The Keith Genealogy, on p. 53, postulates a brother to Roswell named "Ruel R." who married 1818 Mary T. Wheeler, birth estimated about 1793 to squeeze in between recorded births in 1792 and 1795, but no such birth record is found, nor could any other record about "Ruel" be located. It seems almost certain that this is confusion caused by not realizing there were two marriages for Roswell. Overall, there is just enough consistency here to give the ring of truth, but no source has enough consistency to lend any confidence in conclusions drawn from their data.
