BIRTH: By about 1587 based on estimated date of marriage.
DEATH: Salem between 20 February 1654/5 (date of will) and 26 June 1655 (probate of will).
MARRIAGE: By about 1612 Alice _____ (assuming she was the mother of his children). "Alice Molton" joined the church at Charlestown 27 December 1632 [ ChChR 1]. She evidently predeceased her husband.

    ASSOCIATIONS:

There have been suggestions that Robert was brother of THOMAS MOULTON (see sketch below) who appeared at Charlestown in 1631. This seems more than possible, but there is no supporting evidence. Thomas stayed in Charlestown, while Robert soon returned to Salem; Thomas was about fifteen to twenty years younger than Robert; and the two men do not interact in any way.

We should also consider the possibility of a connection with the various Moultons who arrived some years later, from Ormsby, Norfolk, and vicinity. The names Robert and Thomas appear in both families; and there are connections of the early and late Moultons with Salem. The Moultons of Ormsby have, however, been studied extensively, and there do not seem to be any spare Roberts or Thomases who might be identified as the Charlestown men [ NEHGR 141:313-28, 144:245-63, 147:129-45].

Henry and Nicholas Phelps, sons of Eleanor Trusler, witnessed Robert Moulton's will, while Robert Moulton Sr. witnessed the wills of Thomas Trusler and Eleanor Trusler, and participated in appraising their estates [ EPR 1:183, 212; EQC 1:356]. This may have been simply the consequence of the Trusler and Moulton farms being adjacent to one another [ EPR 1:183], but a relation by blood or marriage is certainly possible.

    COMMENTS:

In a letter dated Gravesend, 17 April 1629, Gov. Craddock described Robert Moulton: 'We have sent six shipwrights of whom Robert Molton is chief …' [SLR 1:x; MBCR 1:54].

Robert Moulton was admitted as an inhabitant of Charlestown in 1630 [ChTR 6], and was in the lists of inhabitants of 9 January 1633/4 and January 1635/6 [ChTR 10, 15]. He signed the agreement of 10 February 1634/5 which established the office of selectman in Charlestown [ChTR 13].
