BURLINGTON — The Rev. Robert C. Mooney Jr.., 87, of 504 Alamance Road, Burlington, went to be with Jesus on December 18, 2002.

He was a native of Alabama, but he lived in North Carolina for many years.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Nellie Graves Mooney of the home; one son, Robert J. Mooney and his wife, Ruth of Harrisburg, N.C.; one daughter, Jandy L. Mooney of Durham; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Robert C. Mooney Sr. and Ollie Ray Mooney; two brothers, Floyd Mooney and Claude David Mooney; and two sisters, Mildred Morris and Mabel Mooney.

He graduated from Birmingham Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama with an A.B. degree. He received his B.D. degree from Duke University Divinity School.

The Rev. Mooney faithfully served the following congregations of the United Methodist Church during his 40 years of ministry; in the Alabama Conference: Oak Grove Charge and Alexandria Charge; in the North Carolina Conference: Salem and Culbreth Memorial in Fayetteville, Duke’s Chapel and Asbury in Durham, Chestnut Street in Lumberton, First Church in Cary, First Church in Graham and Grifton, Southern Pines, Raeford, and Williamston.

He served as President of the Ministerial Associations of Williamston, Southern Pines, Lumberton, and Graham. He was on the Committee for Enlistment for four years and on the N.C. Conference Board of Ministry for 13 years. He was Pastor Emeritus of the First United Methodist Church in Graham. He retired in 1981 and made his home in Burlington. Robert Mooney lived a life of commitment to Jesus Christ and to his family.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church of Graham by Dr. Ken Hall, the Rev. Dermont Reid, and Dr. Rodney Hamm. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at the First United Methodist Church of Graham from 1:30 to 3 p.m. prior to the service, and at other times at the residence.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Bible Class of the First United Methodist Church of Graham and the Methodist ministers and their wives of the N.C. United Methodist Church Conference. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Mooney Scholarship Fund at Friendship United Methodist Church, 4612 Friendship-Patterson Mill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.
