Daily Times-News, The Wednesday, September 07, 1966 ROBERT M. MEBANE Lt. Col. Robert M. Mebane, son of Mr. and Mrs.. SIDNEY R. Mebane of 916 N. Main St., has entered the Air War College, the U. S. Air Force senior professional school, at the Air. University, Maxwell.AFB, Ala. Col. Mebane begins 10 Months of intensive study in the university level course which provides senior officers and key civilians a better understanding of the elements of national power and aerospace resources. The colonel served, in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. Mebane, a graduate of Burlington High School, received Ms-B. A. degree in 1950 from the University of North Carolina and was commissioned there upon completion of the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps program. He is a Member of Lambda Chi Alpha. His wife Rosalie, is the daughter of Mrs.. C. S. Green of 719 N. Eighth St., Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Robert McNair “Buddy” Mebane

BLUFFTON, S.C. —Retired U.S. Air Force Col., Robert McNair “Buddy” Mebane, 80, died at his home in Bluffton, S.C. on September 30, 2007.

He was born May 9, 1927, in Burlington to Sidney and Margaret Murphy Mebane and was a 1945 graduate of Burlington High School, where he played varsity football and was a member of the newspaper staff and Tri-Hi-Y club. He entered the U.S. Navy upon graduation and served in the Philippines. He attended Oak Ridge Military Institute and the University of North Carolina, where he was Cadet Commander of the Air Force ROTC and was designated a Distinguished Military Student. He served in Germany during the occupation managing data processing units, was later sent to Headquarters Strategic Air Command, where he was instrumental in helping install a supply system using computers. He also had assignments at Pacific Air Command Headquarters in Hawaii, Military Personnel Center in San Antonio, Texas, Headquarters 7th Air Force, Vietnam and Defense Nuclear Agency at Sandia Base, New Mexico. He was then assigned to the Pentagon, where he oversaw the acquisition and installation of all Air Force computers. He was a distinguished graduate of the Air War College, received his Masters Degree in International Relations from George Washington University and did graduate studies in computer science at American University. His military awards included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medal.

After his retirement in 1975 he worked for Digital Equipment Corp. and Gould Electronics. He was a longtime resident of Alexandria, Virginia and moved to Sun City Hilton Head in 2004. He was interested in genealogy and wrote and published a book, “History and Genealogy of the Mebane Family of Colonial Pennsylvania and North Carolina.” He was a life member of the UNC Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Rosalie (Rose) Green of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sons, Robert C. Mebane (wife Barbara) and Craig Mebane; daughter, Rebecca Mebane; and sister, Margaret Parker of Salisbury.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Alexander M. Mebane of Burlington.

Funeral services will be held on Friday October 5th in South Carolina; burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery December 11th at 1 p.m.
