Robert Mason was born on 23rd March 1810 and baptised nearly five months later at Barnack in Northamptonshire, son of Elizabeth Mason, formerly Gamble, and her husband William Mason, a cottager.

By 1838, Robert had moved about 140 miles south to Brighton. He married Fanny Pocock there in 1838. They remained in Brighton after their marriage, having eight children there between 1838 and 1855. The 1841 census finds the family living at Bloomsbury Street, with Robert working as a servant and Fanny as a laundress. Fanny's aunt Harriet Coleman (formerly Pocock) and her daughter Charlotte were living in the same house.

Back in Barnack, Robert's mother died in 1842 and his father died in 1850.

In 1851 Fanny and the children were at 13 Bloomsbury Street, along with Harriet and Charlotte Coleman. Robert was staying nearby at his employer's house at 50 Sussex Square on census night. By 1861 Fanny, the children, and the Colemans were living at 8 Lower College Street, whilst Robert was again at his employer's house on census night. He was by this time working as butler to a magistrate called William Vidler Langridge who lived at 44 Brunswick Square.

The 1871 census finds Robert and Fanny living with their son Robert and his wife and children at 3 West Street Hill in Brighton. Robert was described as an unemployed butler at this time. By 1881 Robert and Fanny were living at 5 St George's Terrace in Brighton with their daughter Elizabeth and Charlotte Coleman. Fanny was working as a cook, whilst Robert and Elizabeth were a waiter and waitress - perhaps they were running some form of restaurant there.

On 8th August 1889 Robert was admitted to the Sussex County Asylum at Haywards Heath.[9] He died there on 6th September 1889, just under a month after his admission. He was 79. Fanny survived him by fifteen years.
