He was born on March 15, 1899, in Hico. He was a retired farmer and was a member of many farm organizations and hunting clubs. He moved to Lubbock from Spur in 1920. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lubbock. He married Cordelia Boothe, who preceded him in death. He married Ardellia Thomas on Oct. 22, 1966, in Tahoka. An infant daughter and a son, R.E. Jr., also preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Delwin Jones of Lubbock; two daughters, Verna Ray Enger and Kathryn Tate, both of Lubbock; a stepson, Robbie Reno of Lubbock; two stepdaughters, Danella Dickson and Debbie deTournillion, both of Lubbock; a sister, Lucille Williams of Garland; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
