The first record we have relating to Robert James is an entry in Crisp's Marriage License Index, part of which states: "Robert James of the parish of Christ Church London Batchelor a minor and Alice Smith of the parish of Christ Church in the county of Middlesex spinster a minor... by and with the consent of Robert James natural and lawful father of the said Robert James the minor and also by and with the consent of William Smith the natural and lawful father of the said Alice Smith..." Dated 16 Feb 1760

They were married at Christ Church, Spitalfields on 17 Feb 1760. The age of consent at the time was 21, so from this we can deduce that Robert was born after February 1739. This makes him about 27 on his second marriage and 54 on his death in 1793. Alice Smith must have died before 1767, as he was listed as a widower when he married Susannah Worland (also of Spitalfields) at Christ Church, Spitalfields on 25 Feb 1767. They had at least 5 children, all born in Poplar and christened at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church:

1. William James, b. 18 Nov 1767, bap. 13 Dec 1767
2. Thomas James, b. 23 Mar 1769, bap. 23 Apr 1769
3. Richard James, b. 26 Oct 1770, bap. 2 Dec 1770
4. Ann James, b. 27 Nov 1773, bap. 26 Dec 1773
5. Rebecca James, b. 30 Jun 1776, bap. 28 Jul 1776

A Robert James of Poplar was buried at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church on 31 Oct 1793, and it seems likely it could have been this Robert.

Robert worked as a waterman, so further research could be carried out by searching the Apprentice Bindings books at the Guildhall Library (which record the name of the apprentice, the date of binding, the master's name and mooring, and the date of freedom (i.e when the apprentice having learned his trade, qualified to get his own license) that cover the period 1688 to 1949.
