Robert Harry was baptised on 2nd November 1788 at St Ive in eastern Cornwall, son of Sarah Harry, formerly Grubb, and her husband Robert Harry, a labourer. Robert was the fourth of the couple's eight children. Some time between 1797 and 1800 the family left St Ive and moved ten miles south to the town of Saltash.

Robert married Elizabeth Worth on 16th May 1811 at Stoke Damerel on the Devon side of the River Tamar opposite Saltash. They returned to Saltash after their marriage and had five children baptised at Saltash between 1812 and 1820, although two of them died young, both boys called William.

Elizabeth died in 1835, aged fifty. In 1837 Robert married again, with his second wife being Mary Penny from St Pinnock. At the time of their marriage she was working as a domestic servant. The 1841 census finds Mary still working as a domestic servant at Culver Park in Saltash, whilst Robert was living at Tamar Street in the town on census night. The 1851 census finds them together at Culver Park, looking after Robert's young granddaughter Sarah Watson, whose mother (Robert's daughter Mary Ann) had died in 1843.

By 1861 they had left Culver Park and were living at Fore Street in Saltash.

Mary died on 5th December 1861 at Fore Street. She had been suffering with cancer of the womb for two years. Robert survived her by four years, and died on 23rd December 1865 in Saltash, aged about 77. He left a will which was administered by his granddaughter Sarah Watson and his daughter Sarah Carpenter.
