Robert de Holland, son of Matthew de Holland, was alive in 1241. In thatyear he and his son Thurstan were in prison on the charge of having setfire to a house belonging to the Rector of Wigan and occupied by JohnMansel. The Sheriff, however, was directed to release them on bail.Thurstan did not appear on the day appointed for trial, 'but Robert cameand defended his whole action and put himself for good or evil upon thecountry, to wit, upon twelve knights above suspicion and four vills ofthe neighborhood of Wigan.' A day was given him by the Justices at thenext Assizes, and the Sheriff was directed in the meantime to 'let himhave peace, and in no wise to trouble him or permit him to be troubled."Thurstan appeared before the Justices on July 23, but no prosecutorattended the Court. The Justices asked Thurstan 'how he would acquithimself concerning the fire if any one would speak against him,' and hetoo claimed trial by jury, and was given a day at the Assizes. It doesnot appear that further happened in this case. (Researcher - Jasper LandHolland, II) __________________________________________________________________

"In 1224 Simon de Halsall quitclaimed to Robert de Holland all his right in the two plough-lands in Upholland. The relationship of this Robert to his predecessor Matthew does not appear in the records. He was the ancestor of the great Holand family. His last appearance was to answer a charge of setting fire to one of the rector's houses in Wigan in 1241; he and his son Thurstan were lodged in prison, but released till the trial."
