Before begining a life of crime, he served as a deputy marshal in Wichita, Kansas, keeping the peace in the Osage Nation. In 1890, after he and his brother, Emmett, were accused of selling whiskey to Indians, he abandoned his lawful ways and went to New Mexico Territory, where he formed the Dalton Gang. He was recognized as the leader, and for the next two years he and his brothers, together with various associates, robbed banks and trains, killing anyone who opposed them or stood in their way. He was one of those killed in the disastrous raid on Coffeyville, Kansas.
