Marriage and Family

(see the Family page for references)

Richard Townsend and Joane Markes were married on 14 November 1642 in the parish of Bucklebury, Berkshire, England.

The children of Richard and Joan were unable to provide support for the couple in their old age, and the Quakers had taken over from the Anglican parishes the function of caring for the poor of their own meetings. The widow of their son William also received support from the Quakers in the 1690s.

On pp 299–300 Greene writes, “The Newbury Monthly Meeting register states ‘Richard Townsen aiged 95: years’ was buried 7 9th month [November] 1697. The entries list locations, Bucklebury in this case, but it is not clear if the location is of residence or burial.25 ... By law, baptisms had to be accomplished shortly after birth, and Richard's baptism is in regular sequence with those of his siblings. Thus he was 83 when he was buried, not 95.”

Also, in note 25, “The Bucklebury parish register states Richard Townsend was buried 2 Nov 1697, perhaps RichardA, or perhaps Richard (William, RichardB, RichardC).” That is either this Richard or the son of his half-brother William.
