[edit] Will ExtractRichard Stephenson "of Frederick County and Colony of Virginia" wrote his LWT 21 Mar 1765. It was produced in court 05 Jun 1765 by his wife & two of his sons. (Berkeley Co.WV was created from Frederick Co. VA in 1772.) In his will, Richard provided for his wife (in his will, her name is spelled "Honor" but I have also seen records where clerks picked it up as "Konor," "Ommer," & "Annour"). He named sons (presumably in birth order): John ("oldest"); Hugh; Richard; James, & Marquis (I have also seen records for him spelled "Marcus"). Richard named one daughter, Elenor, and left "a negro woman" to "tend and nurse" her (which might imply Elenor was an infirmed spinster). Richard said John would own the slave after Honor died but John must care for Elenor, if needed. Richard bequeathed 20 pounds each to his stepsons William and Valentine Crawford, though he didn't identify them as stepsons.
