Will Transcript
- Will of Richard Skaggs, written 10 December 1818, Proven May 1821
- In the name of God Amen. I Richard Skaggs of Barren County Kentucky knowing myself to be mortal and subject to death do make this my last will & testament in manner and form following, to wit:
- Item 1st, I leave to my beloved wife, Elizabeth for her support during her natural life the plantation or land I live on containing one hundred and fourteen acres which I give and bequeth to my son John Skaggs, to him and his heirs forever.
- Item 2nd, my muly cow and my white back cow and their calves, if any living of them at our decease is to be equally divided amongst all of my children, but any stock that my son John Skaggs will raise over and above what will support us out of the old stock is to be my son John Skaggs own property.
- Item 3, all of my household and kitchen furniture at my wife Elizabeth's decease my will and desire that it should be equally divided amongst all children , viz: Rhoda Phelps, Abednego Skaggs, Sarah Clemens, Henry Skaggs, John Skaggs, Elizabeth Skelly and Lyddy Skaggs.
- Item 4, I constitute and appoint my son Henry Skaggs and Jacob Smith my executors of this my last will and Testement revoking all other wills or Testements by me hereafter made and do declare this to be my last will and Testement, given under my hand and sele this 10 day of December 1818.

- The foregoing writing purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Richard Skaggs Decd was produced in court and Henry Simpson and Jacob Lemmon two of the subscribing witnesses being sworn, saith that the said Richard Skaggs did in their presence acknowledge and deliver the said writing as his last Will and that they believe he was in his proper senses and of a disposing mind and thereupon the said writing was ordered to be recorded as the true last Will and Testament of the said Richard Skaggs Decd.

"Henry Skaggs, his brothers, Charles and Richard, and Joseph Drake and a group of other long hunters were the first Anglo-Saxons to explore this area. They made their campsite at Mansker's Lick, opening the doorway for the future settlement of Goodlettsville and Middle Tennessee."
