Richard Singleton was born in 1859 at Allington in Lincolnshire. He was the seventh of ten children of a coachman and groom named Robert Singleton and his wife Eliza Worth Bonser. The family stayed at Allington until late 1871 or early 1872, when they moved to Aston on Trent in Derbyshire. Whilst living there, Richard's mother Eliza died, aged 42. Richard was 13 when his mother died.

The next confirmed sighting of Richard is in 1891, by which time he had moved to the southern suburbs of London, married a Mary Ann Garrett from Bolney in Sussex and had a daughter, Mary Edith. Richard and Mary Ann's marriage has yet to be located, but in the 1911 census they claimed to have been married 26 years, implying that they had married in 1884 or 1885. Mary Edith was the couple's only child.

In 1891 Richard was following his father's trade and was working as a coachman and groom, living in Dulwich. By 1901 however, the family had moved to Croydon where they appear to have run a grocery at 44 Tamworth Road, where they were still living in 1911. Richard appears to have both been involved in running the grocery and working as a cab proprietor.

Mary Ann appears to have died in 1940, aged 83. Richard outlived her, and appears to have lived to the good age of 90, dying in 1949.
