Facts and Events
Richard was a prosperous farmer, stock raiser and carpenter. The Rouse family moved from Kentucky to Baxter County, AR in 1884. They began farming, raising cattle and operating a sawmill, cotton gin and gristmill. Richard "Dick" Rouse operated a blacksmith shop which he had moved from Arkana. During Richard's childhook, his parents moved several times in the state of Kentucky, Indiana and Iowa. While living in Crawford County, IN in 1849 his mother, Ravia Jane Rouse, died. Richard moved with his father to live with his grandfather, Moses, in Bullitt County, KY, where Richards father met and married his second wife Byronette Owens. They had a son, John G., and a daughter. In the fall of 1859, Richard moved with his father to daviess County, KY, thence their home-town of Calhoun, McLean County, KY where he, at the age of 23 was married to Louisa Wells. In the late 1870's and 1880's, many Kentucky families migrated south toward Arkansas. Richard Rouse and his family continued to make their home in Calhoun, KY unti 1884 when, at the age of 42, he moved to Baxter County, AR. They traveled by train from Calhoun KY to West Plains, MO. There they unloaded their stock, farming implements and furniture. They traveled south to Baxter Co., AR by wagon over rough roads with their 10 children ranging in age from a few months to 18 years.
