Richard and his wife were “admitted to full communion in the First Church of Hartford” in 1686. Three of their children are baptized there, in 1687, 1693 and 1695. His wife is not named, but since they were admitted together to the church in 1686, it is almost certain that this is Rebecca.

Richard was a man of some prominence, owning a fair amount of real estate, mostly on the east side of the Great River. He was elected “fence viewer” in 1687, 1692, 1694, 1695 and 1697.

The evidence for Rebecca Adams as Richard’s wife comes from a document found in Towns and Lands, vol 5 p. 204, reprinted in NEHGR Vol. 67: “Hartford, May ye 20th 1726 These may certifie whome it may concern yt I Richard Risly of Hartford do of my Certain Knowledge know yt my father John Addams formerly of Hartford, Deceased, had seven children, viz: 4 sons & three Daughters: one son Died without issue: I married one of ye Daughters & Edward Higbee married another: John Brush married ye other: ye sisters are all Deceased but they have left Children as I herd by Jeremiah Addams viz, two higbee & 2 Brushes which ware well last I herd from them: ye above written I am Ready to testify if cald, witness my hand. RICHARD RISLE” The article asserts that “other documents” identify Rebecca Risley, Abigail Higbee and Sarah Brush.

Richard2 Risley, baptized at Hartford, Conn., 21 Aug. 1648, died there after 19 Oct. 1728; married about 1676, Rebecca Adams, born at Hartford, about Aug. 1658, died before 20 May 1726, daughter of John and Abigail (Smith) Adams. … Jeremy Adams was his wife's grandfather. Richard Risley gave testimony, 20 May 1726, that "my father John Addams formerly of Hartford Deceased, had seven Children viz: 4 sons & three Daughters. … I married one of ye Daughters. ...ye sisters are all Deceased [New England Hist and Gen. [Manwaring's Digest, 1:171.] Two brothers of Rebecca (Adams) Risley settled in Great Egg Harbor, Gloucester County, N. J., and three of her sons followed their uncles to that place. Although most of the children were not recorded in town or church records, there can be no doubt that the Risleys of the next generation were children of Richard and Rebecca. That is clearly indicated by the repetition of family names, mention of relationships in records of certain of the children, and the lack of other possible candidates for their paternity.
