"Ogden, Richard. Was at Stamford by 1641 with brother John; stone-masons. Richard settled in Fairfield, where he was the miller. He bought six acres on old Mill River from Giles Smith, and no deed having been given, Eluzar and John Smith (sons and Executors of Giles) gave a deed 9 Feb. 1669 [1669/70].
Inv. of Richard, Sr., of Fairfield, 8 Apr. 1687; widow Mary made oath. Three sons, Richard, David, John; three daughters 'of the deceased aliue ye wife of Sarjt Samuel Ward the wife of Daniel Meker ye wife of Daniel Silleman Junir'; and John Pine had a child in marriage with a dec'd dau. of Richard. Samuel Ward and John Osborn, Adm'rs.
Statements that the dau. who m. Ward was named Alice are based on a clumsy reading of the word 'alive' in the above record.
On 27 Oct. 1690, John Ogden chose Sergt. Samuel Ward for guardian. The widow of Richard was then also dec'd, and Samuel Ward and Joseph Bastard were ordered to finish the adm'n.
Richard, Sr., entered for record 2 Apr. 1679, land purchased from John Sturgis. He entered into a covenant with the town, 20 Dec. 1680, with regard to 'ye mell now standing by ye old mell rever'; and after his death the matter was taken up, Oct. 1690, with his sons Richard, David, and John (the last by his guardian Samuel Ward) and the daus."
