  • Eventually, after continued sea action with the Spanish, in 1593/ 1594, following a harrowing trip through the Straits, his forces at an encounter were greatly outnumbered. After a gallant fight, Sir Richard was taken prisoner off the coast of Peru and dishonorably detained in captivity as taken prisoner. (This voyage is recorded and published as The Observations of Sir Richard Hawkins, 1622/1933) He was detained by the Spanish 9 years, held as hostage for Spaniard held in England. He was ransomed for 12,000pds (money he had inherited but that his stepmother was very reluctant to release for the ransom). He returned to England in Jan. 1603. Citation needed
  • Lady Judith survived her husband. On a slated over her vault in the Slapton Church, near the screen on the floor by the Poole pew, to the right of the alter, is inscribed her name and the year of her death 1629.
  • As late as 250 years after his death, the village tradition told of how Lady Judith Hawkins walked from the old house of Poole to church, a distance of nearly a mile, on a red velvet carpet which a servant unrolled before her as she walked. Her will was proved by her son. Citation needed
