Richard Gray was born on 9th November 1714 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, son of Grace Gray, formerly Pearson and her husband William Gray, a farmer and labourer.

In 1715, when Richard was less than a year old, his father died. Later that same year his mother married again, with a James Onn becoming Richard's stepfather. James Onn then died in 1717, and in 1718 Richard's mother married for a third time, with a Samuel Major becoming Richard's second stepfather.

No evidence has been found to suggest that Richard married. His mother died in 1747.

Richard died at the age of 41, being buried at Heckington on 18th February 1756.
