Facts and Events
Earliest mention in Scituate seems to be the appearance of "Goodman Foxwell's house" on Rev. John Lothrop's list as the second built since he arrived in late Sept. 1634.[2] Admitted to the Scituate church 8 Jan 1634/5.[3] His wife joined 14 Jun 1635, having "her dismission from elsewhere." He appears on the Scituate 1639 list of those who had taken the oath of fidelity and the Barnstable 1643 list of those able to bear arms. His children from 1635 on are recorded at Barnstable. Will of "Richard Foxwell of Barnstable",dated 7 Apr 1668 mentions "son" Samuel Bacon, "sonne" Hugh Cole, son and daughter Nelson [later named as William Nelson]. Samuel and Hugh were executors. There was a codicil dated 19 May 1668 saying that since "my son Nelson hath had a good portion with my Daughter Ruth", he requires them to pay debts out of their share. Inventory taken 30 May 1668, was £26, 18s, of which £12 was real estate. Probated 3 Jun 1668. On 7 Jul 1668 Samuel and Hugh refused to serve as executors, but were ordered to by the court. [4] His will and the few small land grants are the only mentions of this Richard. He was not a freeman, held no offices, and never went to court. This is not the Richard Foxwell who was in Boston in 1630 and settled at Pasquetua.[5] Listed among the original settlers of Barnstable in 1640 on an “original manuscript” at NEHGS, copied in NEHGR 2:64-67, with his daughters listed with their birthdates.
