"Richard1 Church, born in England, probably about 1600, died at Hadley, Mass., 16 Dec. 1667; married in England, Anne _____, born about 1600, died at Hatfield, Mass., 10 Mar. 1683/4, in her 84th year.
A date of birth and line of ancestry were assigned to him in a book on the Church family, also his alleged marriage at Braintree, 18 May 1627, to Anne Marsh. These particulars were purveyed to the author of the book by an English 'genealogist,' and were exposed as not authentic by J. Gardner Bartlett, who pointed out that the extant registers of Braintree do not begin until 1660. There are discrepancies and extreme improbabilities in the ancestral line, and the date of birth assigned to Richard would make him but seventeen at marriage.
He may have come to Hartford with, or soon after, Hooker in 1636, but his first land, entered 1639/40, was by purchase from William Spencer, and by that date he had a house on it. Subsequently, he became a large land owner.
He was chimney viewer in 1647. On 7 Mar. 1654/5, he was 'freed from watching, warding & training,' which suggests that, unless incapacitated, he may then have attained his sixtieth year.
He was one of the sixty men who met at Nathaniel Ward's house, 18 Apr. 1659, to draw up and sign an engagement for removal to Hadley, Mass., and in the 1663 list he and his sons Edward and Samuel appear as proprietors. His will named only four children, Edward, John, Mary wife of Isaac Graves, and Samuel."

Richard Church, Hartford, 1637, was an original proprietor, and received, in 1639-40, a home-lot on the east side of the road to the Cow Pasture (North Main St.) ; freed from watching and warding, etc. March, 1655 ; chosen chimney-viewer, 1648; surveyor of highways, 1655. Removed to Hadley with "the withdrawers," in 1659; d. there, Dec. 16, 166 1. His widow, Anne, d. March 10, 1684, aged 83.-Ch: i. Edward, b. 1628, Hatfield. ii. John, Hartford; b. ab. 1636; freeman, 1658; m. Oct. 27, 1657, Sarah, dau. of Richard Beckley, of New Haven ; died 1691 ; inv. Nov. 9. He was the progenitor of those of the name in Hartford. iii. Samuel, Hadley.
- This man is not Richard Church of Plymouth (spouse of Elizabeth Warren), but Richard Church of Hartford and Hadley who married Anne _____, an entirely different person.
