- ↑ 9.0 9.1 Looking at all the census records, birthplace is definitely in the Barnsley area. There are two places in the West Riding named Ardsley: one near Leeds and one near Barnsley. Ardesley near Barnsley appears to be the best choice from our database. Meersbrook Dyke is probably closer to being a street address--it certainly could not be considered a parish.
