Rebecca Procter was baptised on 3rd July 1786 at Kirkby la Thorpe in Lincolnshire, daughter of Elizabeth Procter, formerly Preston, and her second husband David Procter.
On 25th November 1806, aged 20, Rebecca married William Clay in the neighbouring parish of Heckington. They went on to have twelve children between 1807 and 1833, although at least five died young. Their first child was baptised at Wigtoft in 1807, and their second child baptised at Fishtoft in 1809. By 1811 they had returned to Heckington, where all their other children were baptised. In Heckington the family lived at Heckington Fen, the low-lying area to the east of the village. William worked as an agricultural labourer.
Rebecca's mother died in 1815 back in Kirkby la Thorpe. Her father died in the nearby town of Sleaford in 1826.
The 1841 census finds Rebecca, William, and two of their sons living at Heckington Fen.
Rebecca died on 13th May 1853, at Heckington Fen, aged about 67. William survived her by nearly 19 years.
