    iii. POLLY (DEWING), b. Nov. 5, 1769; d. Feb. 19, 1842; m. Jan. 25, 1791, Elias, son of John and Sibyl (Bugbee) Child, b. Jan. 7, 1758, in Woodstock, Ct.; d. Nov. 28, 1824. He was a merchant in West Woodstock, Ct., and owned the largest farm in the town in addition to his store. He presented to the Congregational Church in West Woodstock a bell for its meeting-house. His gravestone has the following inscription: --

    In memory of Elias Child 2nd Esqr. who closed his active and usefull life Nov. 28, 1824. Ae. 67 years.
    Though clasped in the cold arms of death
    His deeds declare his fame,
    His works survive his mortal breath
    And loudly speak his name.
