Phillip Donald Stephens was born on December 6, 1911 in a small house on the land of Mollie Shaw. The land, in Houston County south of the City of Dallas and near the city of Trinity.

The first of 4 children born to Joseph and Oma, Phillip lived a relatively normal life on the plans of East Texas. His dog, Rover went everywhere with him.

In 1918, The Spanish Flu struck America. As the pandemic swept the nation many people died. Phillip was going to so many funerals, that it started to really upset him. Finally at one funeral, Grandma Mollie suggested that his Mother not tell him that it was a funeral. When the funeral came about, they sent Phillip off to play with the other kids. It wasn't long before he came back and said, "Mama, they say there's another dead woman here."
