Facts and Events
Likely born in Somerville (1899)-- where parents lived in 1900 census; In 1910, family lived in Chelmsford (perhaps on a farm); by 1920 at S. Walker, Lowell, MA. Member, 32nd degree, Scottish Right temple (Masons.) "The Masons will bury me." (per Cynthia WBogdonoff Wheller) Per PDB, Jr. (Dec 1998): PDB #1 "had a way of making people feel important... The people he could count as friends and associates ranged up the eastern seaboard. He had an extraordinary way with people, an extreme confidence; loved to gamble. He was very friendly with the Florida horse-racing people. On occasion he'd drop us off at church and go down to a crap game. I didn't have an intimate relationship with my dad; only saw him on Sundays. That was the work ethic of those days." Speculator. Bought land in Florida (outside of Tampa) in the 1920s and developed housing tracks, which may have made him a millionaire by age 25. [Philip III and Jillaine Smith visited this neighborhood in Feb 2004; we have photos.] Invested in silver mine in Baker OR in mid 1920s. In 1927, when his wife was pregnant with PDB, Jr., he drove to Oregon in a Pierce Arrow (accompanied by wife's cousin Algin Osterman) and found that the silver mine was under 80 feet of water. He abandoned the property; the state took it over. He was flat broke by the time the Depression hit. After the Crash, he got into the grocery business (wholesale meat); and lived briefly in Claremont, NH. Found sites for supermarkets. He was a market analyst. Made a lot of money and lost a lot of money, dfsrepeatedly. During WWII, he was in the marine salvage business at Cape Cod; the Etta Mae tin ship, sank off Wellfleet, MA, in a storm, leaving him bankrupt. Land Deed: February 11, 1925, 40 acres, Randolph CountyTownship 19 North, Arkansas, sum of $10. Travelled and moved the family around a great dealWas in Tampa, FL in 1925 where daughter Cynthia was born. They went back to Lowell, MA in 1927.Lived in Pawtucket, RI then Providence, RI through mid 1930s. PDB, Jr., believes they were in Keene, NH, for a time, where PDB I was a butcher. NOTE: Philip Bogdonoff found in Boulder, CO in 1930 census is NOT PDB, I. 1937: PDB Jr. believes that he, (PDB Jr.) lived with Uncle Aubin Bellanger and Aunt Lillian Peterson in Lowell, while Cynthia lived with Uncle Arthur and Aunt Sid Peterson in Lowell "while Dad sought work and finances to reunite the family. Such were the 'depression' events." 1938: Moved to and settled in Springfield, MA. December 1954: with wife, daughter and granddaugther, visited the O'Donnel's house in West Hartford, CT to deliver Christmas presents. "I don't feel well, can I sit down?" Twenty minutes later, he was dead. Funeral was Christmas Eve. Per Cynthia Bogdonoff Wheeler (conversation 22 Dec 2003 with PDB III and Jillaine Smith): Philip Bogdonoff I never went to synagogue but had a funeral service at the synagogue. [FIND THIS! Would have been in/near Lowell, MA] September 2004: Cynthia believes this service was arranged by friends of PDB I and NOT his family. None of his Bogdonoff siblings attended the service as CBW recalls. He may be buried (ashes) at Edson Cemetery, Lowell, MA, with the PETERSON family, although obituary says he was buried in Springfield, MA.
