Peter Ralph was born in 1864 at Newington in the southern suburbs of London, son of Ann Ralph, formerly Townsend, and her husband Thomas Ralph, a porter. Peter was initially called William George Ralph, but took to calling himself Peter sometime between the ages of six and sixteen. Both the 1871 and 1881 censuses find him living with his parents and siblings at 3 Park Street in Bermondsey.
On 14th August 1887, aged 22, Peter married Hannah Meakins at the church of St George the Martyr in Southwark. They went on to have a number of children, but saw many of them die young; Hannah reported in 1911 that she had had fourteen children but only seven were then still living.
The 1891 census finds Peter, Hannah and their baby son living at 7 Beckway Street in Newington, where they just had one room. Peter was working as a carman in a jam factory. By 1901 they were living with their children at 7 North Row in Newington (which had recently been absorbed into the new Metropolitan Borough of Southwark). They later moved to nearby Camberwell, where the 1911 census finds them living at 10 Hollington Street.
Peter died in 1924, aged 59. He was buried at Camberwell Old Cemetery on 10th June 1924. Hannah survived him by nearly nineteen years.

This birth entry has been linked to the Peter Ralph who married Hannah Meakins on the basis of the 1871 and 1881 censuses, in which the same Ralph family is living at 3 Park Street in Bermondsey, having a six-year-old William G. Ralph with them in 1871 but a sixteen-year-old Peter Ralph in 1881. When Peter Ralph married in 1887 he said his father was Thomas Ralph, a porter, which matches the father of William George / Peter from the censuses. No earlier record of ‘Peter’ has been found than the 1881 census and no later record of ‘William George’ has been found than the 1871 census. Given the similarity in age, the most likely explanation would appear to be that they are the same person, with William George adopting the name Peter some time between the ages of six and sixteen and remaining known as Peter for the rest of his life.
