The data source for Peter Mumma is Leora Rabuck, 1920 3rd Ave., Altoona PA 16602, Robert Moomaw's book "Moomaw, Mumma, Mumaw, Mumaugh Genealogy" 1990, and various other books and documents.
Data source and researcher is Douglas Mumma, 2123 Farmington Place, Livermore, CA 94550 E-mail doug@mumma.org
Peter Mumma, unmarried and age 27, came to America on ship "Patience", master John Brown on 16 September 1748. He signed the oath of allegiance with his mark "P", showing that he was not as well educated as the other Mumma/Momma immigrants. It is interesting that the clerk of the court clearly wrote his name as MUMMA, something that most people never do when they only hear the name pronounced. I know from years of experience with the surname of Mumma that no one spells it right unless they are very familiar with it and have seen it spelled. This may suggest that he had a letter or some other document with him upon which his name was written. Pure speculation, of course.
We have no knowledge whether Peter was related to any of the other Mumma immigrants, however DNA evidence suggests that he shares a close common ancestor with the other immigrants, Jacob and Leonard Mumma, but has his own unique "fingerprint". Peter has been assigned the Henry Reference number of "4" and all of the reference numbers for his descendants begin with the number "4".
One of the useful tools for researching Peter is the tax rolls for Lancaster County. While the search has not been exhaustive, it is quite revealing. Peter is first found in the 1763 tax rolls living near George Anthony Mumma, however he is not taxed for any land, suggesting he was a tennant. He did not appear on the previous tax list of 1759. He is found again on the 1769, 1770, 1771, 1772, & 1773 tax lists.
The birth/baptisms of five of Peter's six children were recorded in the records of the Frist Reformed Church of Lancaster. One, Barbara, was recorded the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster. One of the most useful documents, however is the ministerial record book kept by Rev. Henry B. Shaffner. [A photo copy of this book is located at the Lancaster County Historical Society]. Henry did a unique thing of creating a "summary" record for many of his Columbia Reformed Church members. In his book he records the birthdate, parents, marriage and death date for the 3 eldest children of Peter, namely John (1763), Phillip (1765) and Frederick (1767). These records do contain some errors since he wrote the birth dates long after the people the time of the events. He wrote the entries in German, so it is difficult to translate/transcribe some ot the notes that he inserted in the entries. The greatest difficult task is identifying Peter's grandchildren. Through various document I believe we have a reasonable identification of all grandchildren, except those of his son, Philip.
