Peter Campbell with his wife and little daughter Janet, in company with others from the neighborhood of Killin, left their home in the Highlands of Scotland to make new homes for themselves in this country. They sailed from Greenock, Scotland on the vessel Amsterdam Packet, shortly after the first of March 1798 (or 1796), then upon arriving at New York about 1 May, proceeded by boat to Albany, thence on foot to Johnstown where others from their country had previously settled. The next spring in March, this group of Perthshire Highlanders left Johnstown in oxen drawn sleighs and in ten days arrived at "Big Springs" near the area now known as Caledonia, NY. Peter Campbell bought 175 acres of land for $3.00 per acre on Spring Creek, north of Big Springs and later bought additional adjoining land. Peter was one of the founders and trustees of the Caledonia Presbyterian Society in 1802. Church meetings were held in his home for several years and he built a small building near his homestead residence for Rev. Alexander De Noon which he used as a study for years. Alexander De Noon's son James DeNoon describes Peter thusly: "He was a noble grandparent that you can be truly proud of, as an extraordinary man of rare habits of life - His stature was about five feet eleven inches, spare in frame, somewhat stooped, long features, solemn but pleasant countenance, piercing black eyes, wavy black hair, wore his beard on his cheeks, trimmed short with upper lip and lower part of the face always clean shaved. He was astute and no ways bashful or at a loss on any occasion".
