Peter Henry Allen was born in 1847 at Little Stanmore in Middlesex, son of a Sarah Allen, formerly Whitlock, and her husband Peter Allen, a pig dealer. The parish of Little Stanmore included the western side of the town of Edgware, which Peter later gave as his place of birth. The 1851 census finds young Peter living with his parents and siblings on Edgware Road in the parish of Hendon - another parish which at its edge was very close to the town of Edgware. By 1861 Peter had left home and was living at Marylebone in the western suburbs of London with his brother Frederick, their sister Martha, who had been widowed already by the age of 23, and her daughter. At this time Peter was described as a servant. By 1871 Peter's mother had died and he had returned to live with his father and brothers George and Henry at Boundary Bridge House Farm in Hendon - presumably the bridge referred to was Edgware Bridge just south of the town crossing Edgware Brook which was the boundary between Edgware and Hendon parishes.
In about 1879, if not before, Peter settled in the Paddington area of London, living with a Sarah Jane Lewis. They presented themselves as though married, although no actual marriage record has been found for them yet. Whilst Sarah was pregnant with their first child Peter was thrown from a horse in Grays Inn Road and had to spend time in the Royal Free Hospital.
Between 1880 and 1885 Peter and Sarah had four children together, who were all baptised in 1886 at St Barnabas's Church in Marylebone. By the time of the 1891 census the family had settled at Adpar Mews in Paddington, just off the Edgware Road, where they had two rooms. They were still at Adpar Mews in the 1901 census, but by then had three rooms.
Peter's eldest son married in 1899, and he became a grandfather shortly afterwards. Both Peter's daughters married during 1902.
Peter died in 1905, aged 58. Sarah outlived him by several years.

Whilst no marriage for Peter and Sarah Lewis has yet been found, this birth has been linked to the Peter Allen who lived as an adult with Sarah Lewis on the basis that it is in the district which covered Edgware, which he consistently gave as his place of birth whilst living with Sarah, at about the right time to correspond with the age he gave, and the 1871 census shows that the Peter born in 1847 had become a horse dealer, which is the same occupation as that of the Peter Allen who lived with Sarah Lewis. Given that in his first census appearance at the age of four his parents gave his place of birth as Little Stanmore (which immediately adjoins the town of Edgware) it is considered that he was probably actually born in Little Stanmore. His birth certificate would need to be obtained to confirm the place of birth.
