Facts and Events
Pearl was a tall, thin woman. At the time of her wedding she couldn't cook. After a cooking disaster early in her marriage she went to cooking School and became an excellent cook. During the depression the family butchered their own cow or pig and hung them in the garage were they would freeze. When the weather warmed and the meat started to thaw it all had to be canned before it spoiled, a major undertaking. There was a good size garden where asparagus was grown and sold to neighbors. The other vegetables grown were all canned, and there was a lot of corn and tomatoes. Phyllis once won a bag of groceries at a company picnic that contained a tin can of tomatoes and was surprised to learn that they were commercially canned. Daniel liked tomato juice that was very spicy and grew peppers that were so hot that they would burn your hands if you didn't handle them carefully. Grapes were also grown for juice and jelly. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Herald Press, St Joseph, MI July 20, 1949 Final arrangement for sending a delegate to the department convention on the American Legion auxilary in Detroit..........
