Pauline obtained an A.B. degree in English from Radcliffe College in 1916. Since her father had died in 1912, Pauline lived with her grandfather Artemas and her mother Amy, and became the cashier for A. L. Brooks Lumber Co., her grandfather's business in Lowell, MA. With Winthrop she lived most of her life in Pomfret, CT, and after his death she became an involved Trustee of the Pomfret Public Library.

Pauline and Winthrop had three children.
