Low is an old English word for a

small hill, and the seat of the family being on a gentle elevation on

the north side of the river Ferne, they apparently took their name from that location. From a branch that were located in County Derbyshire, England was descended Patrick Lowe, of Derby who married Jane ??? and had issue: among others a son, John Lowe, who emigrated to MAryland about middle of the 17th century [someone else commented that "the dates for Patrick and John are too far apart . . . I suspectw e are missing a generation."]

Patrick's son, Major John Lowe settled in St. Marie's County Maryland

and died there. He was a Major of the Colonial Troops of St. Maries,

a County Commissioner in 1694-97 and a Burgess for St. Maries County 1697-1701.
