Acquisition of Land from Orange County, Virginia Records:

  • Pg. 209-212. Indenture 24 July 1745 between James Cathey of county of Augusta and Patrick Crawford of same.. lease and release for ₤170.. sold tract containing 675 acres, part of a tract of land of 1,350 acres granted to James Cathey by Pattent 13 August 1743.. Record at the Secretary's Office of this Colony.. lying in Augusta County, both sides of the Shannando River.. bounded by John Givin's land.. land of said Story... (signed) James Cathey (seal). Witnesses: Thomas Lewis, Andrew Lewis, James Robertson. Recorded Orange County 6 September 1745. [Orange County Deed Book 10, pg. 48].

Page 31, 4th December, 1786. Patrick Crawford's will - - To son, George; to son, John; to sons, James and William, twins, tract purchased of Madam Wood; to daughter, Martha; to daughter, Mary; to grandson, George McChesney; other children have received their parts; to four sons. Executors, sons George and John. Teste: Jno. Poage, James Crawford, Alex. Robertson. Proved, 18th December, 1787 by Poage and Robinson and executors qualify.

Patrick lived on the farm lying on Middle River (owned by his descendent John H. Crawford in the early 1900's). In 1756 Patrick was a member of Captain James Allen's company of militia and at a court-martial held September 2, 1757, he was fined for not appearing at general muster.

The first of this family, who emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania, was Patrick Crawford. He moved from Pennsylvania to Augusta about 1750, and settled on the farm now occupied by Col. John H. Crawford.
