1ST RHODE ISLAND LETTER ARCHIVE War-date Union soldier's letter collection consisting of 31 mostly ink inscribed letters dating between October 1861 and May 1864 written by Pvt. Edwin J. Leach, Battery C, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery. Leach's battery served throughout the war in the 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac and he describes much of his military experiences. In part: "...[Howl's Hill, Va., Oct. 30]...I have to go on guard only once in six days. Now the drivers have to stand guard...over the horses. I had to stand guard only twice...[Miners Hill, Nov. 9]...I am getting along very nicely. I have some hay in my tent and have two blankets to cover me nights and our overcoats. When it rains we have got a rubber blanket to rap around us some of them had got but one rubber blanket, but I got two...[Miners Hill, Nov. 10]...we got paid off last night. We got twenty 9 dollars and three cents...[Camp Owen, Miner's Hill, Dec. 5]...Ed Williams is off to the hospital...he is very sick...you must not tell...his mother...it will make her uneasy...[Miner's Hill, Dec. 22]...we get white bread to eat. We get white bread every night...[Jan. 8, 62]...I am goin to buy me a revolver when we get paid off. We expect to be in a fight in a few days and I thought I would need one. We can't tell our soldiers from the secesh. One might come up to me and draw up and shoot me...[Feb. 1]...we hadn't drill in four weeks. When we take our horses to water the horses goes up to there knees. We [?] have to clean them off...[Mar. 8]...we had marching orders. We all packed up and hitch up and stood by our horses...we had three days rations...[Fairfax Court House, Mar. 12]...we are in Fairfax. The rebels has retreated from Fairfax...we found wooden guns [all the way] to Fairfax...we have been out to Manassas and we come back to in camp. We thought that [there] was goin to have a big fight when we come out here but we never seen a rebel. We can see where the rebels was in camp...when we come out here we went in the house and got lot[s] of things...[Mar. 15]...we are in Fairfax, but we are goin to Richmond Monday...[White House, Va., Mar. 17]...we have been on the move all the time...we have to move every day...[Camp near Harrison Landing, July 13]...I suppose you have got that letter...and that you have heard all about the fight...[Harrison Landing, July 18]...I have worn one shirt ever since the fight...I did loose every thing that I had when we were fighting...[Harrison Landing, July 20]...you wanted to know whether any of the boys got hurt that I know, yes...Owen Knight was hit by a piece of shell...some of the boys is lousy and I pick some off of me. The boats is so busy bringing up guns and ammunition...you wanted to know if I was frightened much I was at first, but when I got at it I didn't care for all of the bullets the rebels have got...Tell mother if I get hurt they will send me home, but if I get killed they won't...because they can't tend to the wounded fast enough...[New Baltimore, Aug. 22]...I will send my picture the next time I write. It is the best one that [I] ever had taken. They say it looks just like me...[Brandy Station, Jan. 18, 1864]...James Madison...has reenlisted...and got his bounty. There was only fifteen that enlisted again. They have got to be back here again the last of the month...Nicholas Lawton and me tent together...he is a good cook. He and me both takes care of the officers harnesses...[Camp near Spotsylvania, May 14, 1864]...we have been marching ever since the fourth of this month...the battery is hitched up ready to move...".
