2 Jun 2006 - Dr. Oscar G. Darlington Jr., 97, Bluffton, Ohio, retired dean of Liberal Arts at Ohio Northern University, died at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton, Ohio. He was born in Downingtown, Pa., on Feb. 21, 1909, the son of Oscar G. and Emily Jane “Jennie” (Bareford) Darlington Sr. He married Miriam H. Wilson on Dec. 31, 1938. She preceded him in death April 29, 1999. He is survived by nine children, Helen (Frank) Scalzi, Lima, Ohio, Dawn (Jim) Tallman, Warren Ohio, Mahlon (Dayle) Darlington, Ames, Iowa, Phoebe (Jim) Reed, Lima, Ohio, Lynette (Paolo) DePaoli, Verona, Italy, Pastor Gerbert (Linda) Darlington, Lima, Ohio, Eunice (Tom) Hutson, Macomb, Ill., Emily Jane (Robert) Hoover, Bend, Ore., and Bernice (James) Brady, Saugerties, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two nephews. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Elizabeth Armstrong, one brother, Joseph Parke Darlington and one grandson, Tirentus “Trent” Hutson. He received his master’s in arts and history from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in medieval history from the University of Pennsylvania. He served as the academic dean of three colleges, including Regional Council for International Education centered at the University of Pittsburgh, dean of Polytechnic Institute of Puerto Rico and retired in 1976 as a dean of Liberal Arts at Ohio Northern University. He was the author of several books of history. He was a long-time member of Niles Rotary Club, the Past District Governor of Rotary International District 6600 in northwestern Ohio, Rotary Foundation and was honored with the Paul Harris Fellow. He served for three years as zone leader for Gideons International and established Gideon Camps in Geauga County and East Liverpool. He served as secretary, president and chaplain of the Trumbull County Gideon Camp. Listed in Who’s Who in America, Oscar was active in the United States Power Squadron, Barbershop Quartet singing and served on the Board of the Lima Symphony Orchestra. He was also a member and past president of the Youngstown Torch Club. He was a member of the Warren Central Christian Church and a former member and elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Niles and former elder at three Presbyterian churches, Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., Plattsburgh, N.Y., and San German, Puerto Rico. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 2, 2006, at Central Christian Church, Warren Ohio. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
