[Note: this deed is dated in 1771, but it appears likely it is actually in 1772, as it appears in the deed book just AFTER the record above in July 1772].
  • Page 430.--19th January, 1779. Nicholas Leeper by George Seawright, his attorney, to John Oliver. Gawin Leaper, late of Augusta, sold to John Oliver 66 acres patented to James Leeper, father to said Gawen, 5th June, 1747. James died intestate and land became vested in Nicholas Leeper as heir (?).

(1) NICHOLAS LEEPER, FIRST NAMED IN THE IMPORTATION RECORDS, AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA. HE WAS THE OLDEST AND HEIR-AT-LAW OF HIS FATHER'S ESTATE. HE WAS ENROLLED 1742 IN CAPT. JOHN CHRISTIAN'S COMPANY MILITIA.

HIS NAME ALSO APPEARS IN CAPT JAMES CATHEY'S COMPANY, FOR TAX PURPOSES, POSSIBLY BECAUSE HE OWNED LAND ON NAKED CREEK. HE IS ALSO LISTED IN CAPT. JOHN SMITH'S COMPANY.

NICHOLAS' WIFE WAS NAMED MARY. BY EARLY 1760 HE WAS IN NORTH CAROLINA. HE SETTLED IN GASTON COUNTY NEAR HIS UNCLE ROBERT LEEPER AND BROTHER JAMES LEEPER JR. WHERE WITH OTHERS BUILT THE OLD FORT AT THE SOUTH FORK ON THE CATAWBA RIVER.

IN 1761 HE BOUGHT LAND ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE CATAWBA FROM ROBERT LEEPER 0PP: ANDREW CATHEY'S SURVEY. RECORDS SHOW HE RECEIVED A LAND GRANT FOR 190 ACRES OF LAND ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE CATAWBA RIVER JOINING HIS OWN, ALEXANDER McLEAN'S AND JAMES CARTER'S LINES, APRIL 23, 1762. IN 1763 HE BOUGHT LAND ON THE BROAD RIVER AND RICHLAND CREEK FROM FRANCIS BEATY AND ROBERT LEEPER.

IN 1763 HE GAVE POWER OF ATTORNEY TO HIS SON JAMES LEEPER AND GEORGE SEAWRIGHT TO SETTLE HIS FATHER'S ESTATE IN AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA SON JOHN LEEPER WAS ADMINISTRATOR OF NICHOLAS ESTATE, APRIL 4, 1786.

THERE IS A MARY LEEPER BORN IN 1728 AND DIED OCTOBER 20, 1784, WHO IS BURIED IN SMITH'S CEMETERY, BELMONT, GASTON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA. SINCE THERE IS NO MENTION OF A WIFE IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF NICHOLAS ESTATE-JANUARY 1, 1791, WE MAY ASSUME THAT COULD BE HIS WIFE MARY.

    In this County Down Register is found James Leeper, who produced a testimonial from Rev Charles Seaton to the minister at Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church 12 Oct 1716. He married Margaret Curry 22 Dec 1718 at Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church, Rev Henry Livingston.
