    23 Nicholas Cole(35), ± 52 in 1678. First ment. 1652 in Wells. In 1658 he occup. his father's farm. In 1664 he was gr. the ferry priv. at Cape Porpus (Mousam) River for 7 yrs. By 1666 he was partn. with John Purington making oars and fishing, and built in Cape Porpus. In 1672 they rem. to Harpswell where they obtained from the Ind., 26 Nov. 1672, a deed covering that town. When the inhab. fled in Philip's War, N. C. brought many of them away. Constable 1658; appraiser 1662; jury 1668, 1686, 1688, 1689; gr.j. 1687, 1688. … He d. 21 Dec. 1688, adm. to s. Nicholas. His wife's name 'Relief' in the Kit. record (prtd.) of his dau. Jane's mar. is misr. of -relict-. In 1668 his wife was Jane. Ch: Nicholas, b. 1656.; Jane, m. Joseph Littlefield, Capt.     ... (II) Nicholas, son of William and Elizabeth (Doughty) Cole, was born 1636, as shown by a statement of his age thirty years later. He resided in Wells and Kittery, Maine, and signed a petition to Cromwell in 1656, and was constable at Kittery in 1658. In 1664 he was appointed to operate a ferry for Cape Porpoise.
    A record of three of his children is found, namely Nicholas, Jane and Ann. Doubtless there were several others, but the destruction of early dates in the section where he lived and the general confusion of authorities in that early period makes it impossible to identify them. ...
