Nicholas J. Canterberry, born in Tennessee about 1811, enlisted in Co. B. of the 44th Alabama Infantry Regiment at Selma, Alabama, on March 29, 1862, with men from Bibb, Calhoun, Dallas, Dekalb, Lowndes, Randolph, Shelby & Wilcox counties. The regiment reached Richmond on the 1st of July and was attached to Brig. Gen. A. R. Wright's Brigade, along with the 3rd, 22nd, & 48th Georgia Regiments, and assigned to Maj. Gen. R. H. Anderson's Division. The regiment was greatly reduced from camp diseases and went into the second Battle of Manassas (30 August 1862) with 130 rack and rile wherelost 5 killed and 22 wounded. It then took part in the investment of Harper's Ferry (15 September) . At the Battle of Sharpsburg ( 17 September) the regiment carried 113 rack and rifle into the fight and lost 14 killed and 65 wounded of that number (2/3 of their effictive force). Nicholas was also reported ill on September 17, 1862 and missed the Battle of Sharpsburg. He was discharged from duty for health reasons on October 1, 1862, and he returned to Alabama. He later enlisted in the Bibb County Militia. He is buried next to his son in Hill-Oldham Cemetery.

                                      due to death of son Jefferson D. Canterberry.
                                      Returned to duty in July and was detiled as a nurse
                                      to Warrenton, Va.

Nicholas became ill during BATTLE OF MANASSAS, August 31, 1862 Returned to duty:

               Became ill during BATTLE AT SHARPSBURG, September 17, 1862
               Was sent to hospital October 6,1862

DISCHARGED : October 25, 1862 REASON: OLD AGE - - - RHEUMATISM - - - SICKNESS
