Parentage

Sanborn, in his 1998 NEHGR article on Thomas and Mary (Healy) Brown, identifies Nicholas Brown as the son of this couple. Besides observing that the first children of Nicholas were named Mary and Thomas, he notes that the will of Ruth Brown, a great granddaughter of Thomas Brown, provides the clue necessary to make this identification. Ruth Brown (John3, Francis2, Thomas1) died in 1744, and in her will, she bequeathed her "grate bible" to Ruth Brown, "Daughter of my cousen Joshua Brown of Haverhill." Sanborn identifies Joshua4, as the son of Thomas3 (Nicholas2, Thomas1), making these two Ruth's second cousins once removed. "We are grateful as well to Ruth Brown for mentioning that her cousin Joshua was 'of Haverhill.' There were at least three contemporary Joshua Browns in Essex County in the mid-1700s, but fortunately only one was 'of Haverhill.'"S1

Anderson did not fully accept this analysis, for in the Thomas Brown sketch (published 1999), Nicholas is listed as a possible son of Thomas and Mary (Healy) Brown.
