Personal History

Newman Scarlett was born 30 October 1740 (from his age at death) and baptized 18 April 1742 as the adopted son of Edmund Frost.[4] He died intestate[3] 4 June 1799, in Tewksbury, Massachusetts.[1][2]

Newman Scarlet and Betty Peacock were married 27 October 1761, in Tewksbury, Province of Massachusetts Bay. The births of their children appear in the town records of Tewksbury.

Newman Scarlett and Molly Merrill were married 24 May 1776, in Tewksbury, Province of Massachusetts Bay. The births of their children appear in the town records of Tewksbury.

On 17 September 1799,[3] in the probate court of Middlesex Co., Moley Scarlett, widow, was appointed administratrix of the estate of Newman Scarlet late of Tewksbury, and she, along with Jonathan Brown, esq., and Joel Marshall, yeoman, all of Tewksbury, signed a bond in the amount of $30,000. William Simonds, gentleman, Joel Marshall, and Joseph Frost Jr., yeomen, all of Tewksbury, were appointed to take an inventory, which they did on 9 October 1799. The personal estate was valued at $82.17, the live stock was valued at $54, and the real estate—including house, barn, homestead of 13 acres, additional lots of about 35 acres, and a pew in the meeting house—was valued at $358.12. Debts totaled $338.81, and the estate was declared insolvent by the court. The same three persons were appointed on 4 December 1799 to take a new inventory for setting off the widow's dower, which was taken 1 May 1800. The dower included the use of the south half of the house, half of the cellar, the west end of the barn and barnyard, and about 11¼ acres of land, altogether valued at $120. The widow also received $50 in support.
