In his book John C. Ladd makes no mention of the name of Daniel and Joseph's father. He does state that "In the summer of 1632 his [referring to Daniel] father was lost in an accident at sea and his oldest brother became head of the family as prescribed by English Common Law." He also states: "Daniel had several brothers, all of whom were older, but only have the name of one, Joseph, who was one year older."

This senior Ladd was a farmer and also operated a fishing boat out of Deal.
