NANCY NUTGRASS was born in 1797 at Kentucky. She is listed as 50 (1800) in
the 1850 census, but as 63 in 1860 (1797) and 73 in 1870 (also 1797).
She married ABRAHAM COLLINGS on 10 Jan 1815 at Shelby County, Kentucky.
She
married JOHN CARTMILL on 19 May 1829 at Shelby County, Kentucky. Depending
on the actual date of his birth, John was 17-27 years older than Nancy when
they married. John was listed as 50-60 in the 1830 census. Nancy was only
33 in 1830. Nancy was widow with five children. Her husband Abraham
Collings had died three years earlier. She appeared on the census in the
household of her husband John Cartmill of after Aug 1830 at Putnam County,
Indiana. Either the Cartmill family moved to Indiana after Edna was born,
just in time for the census, or Nancy stayed behind in Kentucky for thier
birth and joined them later. She appeared on the census of 1840 at Clinton
Township, Putnam County, Indiana. There are two males in the household,
ages 15-20, and 20-30. These two don't show up in the John Cartmill census
of 1830. They are likely to be laborers that Nancy hired to help with the
father after John died. Her father's will bequeathed her
- Land belonging to me lying & being in Putnam County Indiana adjoining the tract that my Daughter Nancy Cartmill now lives on it being the only part of my estate that I Desire her to have. 2nd I Desire that my Daughter Nancy Cartmell have the tract of land belonging to me in Putnam County, Indiana upon which she now lives to her & her heirs forever. Also one bay mare it being the:only part of my estate I Desire her to have.
She appeared on the census of
1850 at Clinton Township, Putnam County, Indiana. She appeared on the
census of 1860 at Union Township, Parke County, Indiana. Her name is
misspelled as "Cartman." She appeared on the census of 1870 at Union
Township, Parke County, Indiana. She appeared in the household of her
daughter, Edna Cartmill Webb. She appeared on the census of 1880 at Union
Township, Parke County, Indiana. She appeared in the household of her
daughter, Edna Cartmill Webb.
She died on 31 Dec 1886 at Parke County, Indiana. She was buried at Russellville, Putnam
County, Indiana.
