  8. ↑ 8.0 8.1 Nancy's date of birth presents some difficulties in that her obituary and later censuses list a later birthdate than the 1870 census by about four years. However, because the children in the 1870 census are listed with about two years separating most of the children, it seems difficult to suppose that this was a mistake and that the 1870 census has the wrong order of children. It is far more likely that either she did not know her age and always gave her birth year as 1861, or she intentionally made herself younger. Thus, the age given in the 1870 census is used to calculate her approximate year of birth here.
