Facts and Events
Page 137 of "Concerning the Van Bunschoten or Van Benschoten Family in America" says that Moses' parents moved sometime in 1839 from Armenia, Dutchess county to Broome county, New York; so he could have been born in either place. More research is needed. Page 141: "Moses M. Van Benschoten was educated at the New York Conference Seminary at Charlotteville. He had but recently returned with his parents from the western experiment when the Civil war broke out: straightway he enlisted for two years as 1st Lieut. in Co., C, 23rd, NY Vols., receiving his commission on Apr. 30, 1861. He was promoted to Capt. Feb 16, 1863 and was mustered out with his regiment at Elmira, NY on May 22, 1863. The 23rd as an organization served in the Virginia Campaigns, but Co., C for a portion of the term was detached and on special duty..." Page 142 continues with his military experiences until "the regiment was mustered out of service on June 8, 1865, while on the field near Alexandria, Va., having served about fourteen months."
